The Teen Dating Violence Prevention Project has declared the month of February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Their initiatives to stop dating violence among teenagers have been supported by many public officials.
On the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Project's website, Vice President of the United States Joe Biden is quoted as saying, "Our responsibility - as parents, teachers, mentors, and community leaders - is to guide our young people towards respectful relationships free from harassment and abuse; teach them that it's ok to walk away from a bad situation; and encourage them to speak out when they see a friend in trouble."
The city of Dallas is just one Texas city that has come out in support of Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. The city reports that 1 in 3 young people are affected by physical, sexual, or verbal dating violence and that 1 in 5 people being in a serious relationship reported having been slapped, pushed, hit, threatened or coerced by a partner. The issue of dating violence among teens affects not only the youth, but also families, schools, and entire communities as well.
This month is supposed to be an opportunity for Texas residents to learn more about preventing dating violence and for people to show support for the organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services, and assistance to victims. Those who have been victims of dating violence should not hesitate to contact one of the state's many Texas family law attorneys with help filing a claim.
