Another story of a babysitter who allegedly hit a child has hit the news outlets. The incident caused blunt force trauma. ABC News reports that incidents like this cause nearby Houston community members and Houston family attorneys to question child safety when it comes to babysitting.
A northwest Houston man has been charged with beating his girlfriend's four-year-old daughter to death, according to ABC News; where the man now faces criminal charges.
Mr. Jose Gomez, 33, was babysitting the young girl and her brother at their apartment. When the mother of the children came home, the girl complained of stomach pain. ABC News also reports that the girl had old bruises that were visible. Two hours after the alleged beating, the girl went into cardiac arrest, where she was pronounced dead at a hospital. The mother of the children may also be charged if she knew that Mr. Gomez was beating the children, but didn't intervene.
"I'm always protective of who watches my kids when I'm not there," nearby resident Gina Lagunes told ABC News. "I usually don't leave my kids behind. And for a mom to let the kids be with someone she doesn't know that is going to hurt them or not is pretty bad."
Child Protective Services has since taken custody of the victim's six year old brother. It's possible that the mother could face trouble getting full custody of her son again. Mr. Gomez, who is originally from El Salvador, has since been jailed. The District Attorney's Office told ABC News that they plan on setting a high bail amount for Mr. Gomez.
