Requirement for Divorce: Family Stabilization Classes

| No TrackBacks

James Roark, a Houston family law attorney, wrote an Examiner article that parenting classes can be a valuable tool when it comes to understanding how separation and divorce impacts a child. Family courts in Houston actually require parents involved in divorce cases to attend a "family stabilization" course when there are children involved in the marriage. The law is outlined in Texas Family Code - Section 105.009

Some couples choose to attend the family stabilization courses even if there's no court order involved. Learning about how divorce impacts children can often be a motivating factor in a last attempt to make a marriage work. The Escape Family Learning Center is just one non-profit organization in the Houston area that is dedicated to preventing child neglect within a family. Their court approved class consists of a four hour long workshop for parents that covers the emotional process of a divorce and another two hour long workshop that involves the whole family. Children attend a class with other kids who are also about to have divorced parents and learn how to adjust to changes.

Websites like ParentingChoice.com and PuttingKidsFirst.org offer online courses that have been approved by Texas family courts. The classes online are designed to help parents give children a supportive and comfortable environment and learn new skills related to parenting. After completing an online course, a certificate of completion is mailed out as proof for the courts. The family stabilization courses in Houston vary in price, so it's important to look into the cost before signing up for a paricular course.
