The most famous cardiologist in Houston has surprised Texan residents with legal troubles once again, only this time it's over delinquent child support payments and not the death of a pop star.
Associated Press reports that Dr. Conrad Murray, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of Michael Jackson, requested a court order in California that would have relieved him of his past due child support payments. However, Santa Clara County Superior Court Commissioners denied the doctor's request and said that he must still pay about $16,000 in back child support to the mother of his 12-year-old son.
Dr. Conrad Murray is licensed to practice medicine in Texas and Nevada, but because the doctor owes such a large amount of child support, his Nevada medical license is at risk of revocation. On June 25, a hearing at Clark County Family Court in Nevada will determine if the doctor will lose his right to practice medicine in the state.
Charles Peckham, a Texas family law attorney that represented the doctor in his child support case, says that the California court's recent decision not to relieve Conrad Murray of his outstanding child support may have other negative consequences. Without a Nevada medical license, the doctor may have trouble making future child support payments and may have even more trouble paying for the legal defense in his criminal case.
"We didn't get the court order that we were seeking," Houston family law attorney Charles Peckham told The Associated Press. "This puts Dr. Murray's ability to pay future child support at risk, if the state of Nevada pulls his medical license."
